Litter

drainFor over 25 years KESAB environmental solutions has carried out Australia's most comprehensive litter data collection and reporting system. Litter is counted at over 150 sites across metropolitan and rural South Australia and linked to a further 800 national sites.

The National Litter Index shows clearly that retail strip street precincts, shopping centres and car parks in public areas are consistently among the 4 top most littered sites. Cigarette butts and packets, take away cups and containers, metal and plastic bottle tops, snack bags and wrappers, straws, lollipop sticks and shopper dockets are the most frequently encountered items in the litter stream.

Emerging environmental issues of waste reduction, resource recovery and reuse, climate change, water conservation and sustainability require proactive response. KESAB is taking a lead role, creating sustainable communities through education, action and participation.

Businesses and organisations are increasingly aware of their need to meet new environmental standards and KESAB can assist in waste assessment and auditing to reduce costs and improve performance.

KESAB employs qualified waste auditors conducting waste audits and assessments to establish waste and recycling best practices in a diverse range of businesses and organisations. Outcomes are analysed and reported including recommendations to help businesses and organisations meet benchmarks.

In 2010 KESAB is running a car park litter and litter prevention and awareness campaign in conjunction with Zero Waste SA and the National Packaging Covenant

As well as raising public awareness of litter, the campaign aims to reduce litter in car parks and other public areas associated with public transport hubs, large shopping centres and drive through convenience food and fuel outlets.

Three retail areas have been selected as the 'hubs' of the campaign - Colonnades, Munno Para shopping centre and Jetty Road shopping precinct.
